What Makes The World’s Most Successful People Tick?

There is no doubt that there is enormous hunger for aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners to clearly understand what it takes to stay in the game and of course get to the top of the game.

I am certain that if these factors and principles are lived, the chances of success will be elevated and the road to success a lot quicker. What is equally important is that aspiring entrepreneurs need to know what they getting into - it’s not easy out there.

Travelling and meeting up with international “Tycoons” is an integral part of my daily agenda. The goal is to see exactly what makes them tick and why these mercurial individuals have arrived where so few have.

There are 10 tips and rules that stand out. Let’s take a look:

Tip # 1: Just Do What You Love

I am not certain if there is one successful person that would eliminate these 4 words “Love What You Do” or “Do What YOU Love” from one of the key success factors. This will give you that extra edge!

It allows you to persist during those trying times and it gives you energised and enthusiastic drive from day to day. It automatically projects passion. People do business with people who believe in what they do. If you don’t love what you do, stop and change direction. Most importantly, change it NOW, you will know when you have found it.

TIP # 2: Be Positive & Get Happy

Make the Happiness Factor your priority and change your attitude NOW. It is well known through research that the # 1 reason why people do business with you is because they like you. It’s not because of your product and/or price!

Rule # 3: Network All The Time

They network all the time, in the lift, in a restaurant, wherever they are. They know lots of people. They listen to friends, neighbours, co-workers. They value people and they value relationships. They always act fast, and always say thank you.

Rule # 4: Live In The NOW

Extremely successful people live in the NOW. They know that now is the only time they can control. They have a gift for looking people in the eye, listening to what is being said. They never seem rushed, and they get a lot done. They take full advantage of each day. Successful people don’t waste time, they use it.

Rule # 5: Never Surrender

Succeeding as an entrepreneur or reaching the top of your game in whatever you do is not EASY. As long as you get up and keep moving, you will succeed, there is no way around it. The ability, courage and desire to keep going positively during trying times is what counts and that’s what separates success from failure – Never Surrender.

Tip # 6: Don’t Focus On The Money

One of the biggest motivating factors, if not the biggest, why people start their own business is to make much more money than they are used too. I am not saying that money shouldn’t be in the equation. What I’m saying is that money must be a key ingredient and not the whole cake.

The most successful people focus on helping others and providing value. The money that you earn should be the scorecard of what you do well. Be true to yourself, help others and you will always be okay.

Tip # 7: Don’t Be Afraid To Fail

Entrepreneurship and failure is like a cup and saucer. Let’s start talking about obstacles rather than failure, because that’s what it is. Remember, you only fail when you give up. Keep moving and never give up. The result is that you can’t fail. I don’t believe that I have met one successful entrepreneur who hasn’t encountered obstacles on their route to success. What is important is to embrace these obstacles and use them as opportunities and learning experiences.

Often, these obstacles force you to change direction or think differently about your current plan. The end result is that you move quicker to where you want to go with more positive results. I have encountered many obstacles in my 25 years as an entrepreneur. The resilience factor, the love of what I do, and the never surrender attitude allows me to bounce back and keep moving.

Rule # 8: Is Everyone On Your Team

Let’s say this again, it’s not easy out there and few succeed as business owners and entrepreneurs. Taking this into consideration, we need to ensure that the entire family unit is on the same side. Before starting out, try this. Draw up a one page heads of agreement and get all to agree and sign the document.

The one term in the agreement is as follows, “We are all in this for the long haul, no matter what happens” This allows you to focus on doing business and when those inevitable obstacles pop up, it’s okay because your family is with you. Making this all important life decision without full support is a formula for the loss of your business and family.

Rule # 9: Don’t Take No For An Answer

Tenacity, determination, assertiveness and professionalism are key factors when growing your top line. It is widely known that many give up after the first attempt. Here I’m talking about the sales process. It is a fact that everyone will do business with you; it’s just a matter of time. The disappointing thing is that most give up after the first attempt and most will discard that prospect permanently. What we have to understand here is that at the time of “NO”, the prospect may not say “YES” for many reasons. These reasons have nothing to do with you or what your offer is.

Keep moving on this prospect and never give up. It may take up to 15 impressions, but eventually the prospect will respect your tenacity and do business with you. People want to do business with successful people. If all else fails, you will probably get an employment offer.

Rule # 10: Do It Now

Yesterday and tomorrow does not sit well with successful people. Yes, we can learn from the past and we must have one eye on the future, but more importantly we need to focus on today. People spend 80% of their day on the past and the future and very little on the present. We need to wake up every day and seize the moment. Make it happen as though tomorrow will never come. Don’t procrastinate, get things done and do business, and do it now.
