Starting a small business is a daunting task for anyone. To be effective at anything, however, requires the right tools. Such tools, in this case, mean the right kind of equipment. For small businesses, these are not as obvious as they might first seem and their importance is often underestimated.

Most entrepreneurs, when starting their businesses, will have decided on where to locate their offices. Justifications for office space are usually centered around affordability, distance from home, actual size, parking access and availability, and so on. But, what we also forget, is in relation to equipment, for example: How good is the space in regards to internet access and wireless functionality? How old are the wires and are you within easy reach of service people? Etc.

For example, although your business may rely on wireless connectivity, it would still be impacted by the physical dimensions of your office space. That is because standard wireless access points (or Wi-Fi) can reach devices 40 or more metres away. However, local infrastructure (such as thick walls, ceilings, other such obstacles) can affect and often reduce the range. In these cases, having several wireless access points will make your Wi-Fi coverage more reliable and accessible.

Again, you do need equipment and you might need help acquiring this equipment. But you still need the right space in which to put it.

Equipment

Once you've found the right office space, you then need the right equipment for your business purposes. This means having the right computers, desks, chairs, lighting, printers, etc. that will allow your office to function, without requiring the services of other businesses. That is, done properly, you can set up your business such that you don’t need to leave your office to get your job done to a satisfactory degree.
