How To Keep Your Restaurant Staff Happy

Nobody who’s ever run a restaurant will tell you that it’s easy. The entire success of the business rests on your shoulders. You’re responsible for everything from making sure deliveries happen on time to ensuring that every customer walks away impressed. There’s a lot of pressure on restaurant owners that people don’t necessarily understand.

Sometimes it’s hard to find the time to think about the staff.

happy staff is important to a business that relies on good customer service, especially a restaurant. When people are happy at work they’re more likely to be loyal to their employer and are more invested in the success of the business. Keeping your staff happy doesn’t have to take a lot. In fact, it can be quite simple.

Pay them – Yes, of course you pay them for their hard work. But make sure that you pay them by the date you agreed on. Make a debit order if it helps. Also, pay all your staff at the same time to save you time and effort, and keep them satisfied.

Take their concerns seriously – Have an open door policy and follow through with it. If they have a problem at work, listen and try your best to deal with the situation. And get back to them to check if things are better.

Reward good work – Employers often forget that you have to praise good work as well as give constructive criticism. Maybe start an employee of the month award with a small prize to acknowledge the hardest working staff member.

Don’t overwork them – Remember that working at a restaurant isn’t the easiest job. They often have to deal with difficult customers and work on their feet for long shifts. So, try to organise a schedule that gives everyone some down time. And if you have the space, try to include a small break room where they can chill while they have a cup of coffee during their break.

Get to know them – Yes, you’re their boss and you have to be professional, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make an effort to get to know them. Ask them how their weekend was, get to know the names of their partners/kids, and always remember their birthdays.

Being a good boss isn’t that hard and if you keep these simple things in mind, your staff are guaranteed to be more motivated. And a motivated staff means happier customers. If someone likes their job, it shows in their work.
